Optional Benefit Add-ons (also known as Riders)

Teachers Life offers members the ability to customize their protection through purchasing options that go beyond the primary policy. Known as "riders", these options can be purchased on Teachers Life Term 10, Term 20 and PermaTerm 100 life insurance products.

The Living Benefits Rider will pay you a benefit worth half the value of your policy (to a maximum of $50,000) if you become terminally ill with less than 18 months to live. This rider is included at no additional cost on Teachers Life Term 10, term 20 and PermaTerm 100 life insurance products.

Spousal/Partner Life Insurance Rider
This rider allows you to add on life insurance benefits for your spouse/partner up to the age of 60.

Waiver of Premium For Disability Rider
This rider provides a premium payment feature that will waive your premiums in the event that you have been disabled for six (6) months.

Accidental Death Benefit Rider
If you add on this new rider to your life insurance policy, and your death is as a result of an accident, your beneficiary receives twice the value of your life insurance policy, up to a maximum of $500,000.

Dependents' Life Insurance Rider
This rider will pay a death benefit of $5,000 or $10,000 for each of your dependent children.

Grandchildren's Life Insurance Rider
This rider will pay a death benefit of $5,000 or $10,000 for each of your grandchildren.

Level Term to 80 Life Insurance
For those interested in maintaining a level amount of coverage for a fixed term, our Term to 80 plan is the choice. It is available in units of $25,000, from a minimum of $50,000 to a maximum of $1,000,000. After age 80, a paid-up policy worth 10% of the policy's original value, remains in force until your death.

Eligibility: Members of the education community, actively employed or retired, and their spouses, partners, or children between 40 and 69 years of age can apply.

Term to 100 Life Insurance
Our Term to 100 plan provides long-term protection, with a declining value, at a reasonable price. It is available in units of $25,000, from a minimum of $50,000 to a maximum of $1,000,000. Coverage under this plan remains level until age 60 at which time it gradually declines until age 75, when no further premium payments are due. A paid-up policy worth $3,000 for each $25,000 of insurance originally purchased, remains in force until age 100.

Critical Illness - Covered Impairments
Covered impairments are heart attack, stroke and cancer. The Critical Illness component of e-APP pays a one time lump sum benefit equal to 25% of the policy, should you be diagnosed with one of the following illnesses and survive 30 days from the date of diagnosis.

The following are definitions of the impairments and the limitations and exclusions related to the coverage: 

Heart Attack
"Heart Attack" means the death of a portion of the heart muscle, resulting from the blockage of adequate blood supply as evidenced by new electrocardiographic changes which support the diagnosis of a heart attack and by elevation of cardiac enzymes, typical chest pain, cardiac troponins and any other cardiac biological markers.

Stroke
"Stroke" is defined as a cerebrovascular incident resulting in irreversible death of brain tissue due to cerebral hemorrhage, cerebral embolism, cerebral thrombosis or subarachnoid hemorrhage. This event must result in significant neurological functional impairment that must be present on physical examination by a neurologist at least 3 months after the event and be permanent with no hope of recovery. The diagnosis must also be supported by findings on Magnetic Resonance Imaging, Computerised Tomography or cerebral spinal fluid examination and must be consistent with the diagnosis of a new stroke. Cancer
"Cancer" is a malignant tumor characterized by the uncontrolled growth and spread of malignant cells with invasion and destruction of normal tissue. The term cancer includes leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin's disease and metastatic tumors. Cancer Exclusions & Limitations
